HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS Some house buyers and contractors fail to apply for permits or follow any community standards when working with materials in old homes. Gutting interior walls, removing window and woodwork, removing or scraping exterior siding containing lead paint requires lead safe procedures and adherence to health and building code. Failure to adhere to regulations creates health and safety hazards for the neighbors, workers and the community.
Contractors doing major rehab such as new windows, roofs, additions, structural work and interior demolition must apply for permits and submit architectural plans for review prior to beginning work.
Report illegal activity to Building and Housing or the Mayor's Action Line.
